Celebrate Silent Movie Day with us! Milestone Film Founders Dennis Doros and Amy Heller will join us to introduce this gorgeous animated film from 1926. They will also lead a post-film film Q&A in the theater discussing the movie's restoration and distribution.
German animator Lotte Reiniger crafted one of the first feature-length animated films with her adaptation of “One Thousand and One Nights,” using cutouts, silhouettes, and color tinting. In the film, Prince Achmed finds himself sent to an enchanted island, where he encounters many friends, including a princess, a good witch, and Aladdin, as well as foes led by an evil sorcerer. Almost a century after its release, this enchanting silent film still stands as one of the great classics of animation.
Amy Heller and Dennis Doros are co-founders of Milestone Films, an independent distribution and restoration company. For more than 20 years, they have run the company from their New Jersey home. Milestone is committed to rediscovering and restoring lost, overlooked, and underappreciated films, with a focus on those made by and about women, African Americans, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The company has received awards from the National Society of Film Critics, the International Film Seminars, the New York Film Critics Circle, the Fort Lee Film Commission, Anthology Film Archive, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the Art House Convergence. In 2022 Dennis and Amy cofounded Missing Movies, an organization dedicated to educating and advocating about the problem of lost films and to working with filmmakers and the entertainment industry to making these titles available.
